AP US HISTORY FIELD TRIP!!! Ms Piper’s AP United States History class visited the Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC) in Milwaukee to see Violins of Hope. In the midst of World War II as Germany battled across Europe, the Holocaust was taking place. Jewish prisoners and others targeted by the Nazis played violins in the ghettos and concentration camps. Many musicians were forced to play; others played them as a form of resistance. Their musical instruments bore witness to this atrocity. Violins of Hope-Wisconsin is presented by Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) and their community partners. After the museum tour and workshop on music during the Holocaust the students listened to the story of George Kennedy as told by his daughter Nancy Kennedy Barnett. George Kennedy was a speaker for both the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, presenting about his life in Budapest, Hungary before the war and his life in the Hungarian labor and concentration camps during the Holocaust. He came to America in 1947 on a B’nai Brith scholarship to Texas A&M University where he received his bachelor’s degree. He furthered his education in Madison, Wisconsin when he received a master’s degree in civil engineering and started his own structural engineering firm in Chicago. George was interviewed by the USC Shoah Foundation where his life story is chronicled and held. Nancy is an active volunteer in Milwaukee and sits on a number of community boards. Using video of her father from his talks, Nancy weaves his life story with hers when she speaks.
